When two worlds collide
When two artists from different sides of the world met in Sydney in January 2015 neither could have imagined the bond that would be forged or the events that would follow. Takis Kozokos, a sculptor from Greece, was the artist in residence for Kogarah Council when Tracey Levett, a local painter, made contact. Excited at the prospect of such a distinguished artist living in the Ranger’s Cottage in Carss Park where she walked most mornings, Levett contacted the sculptor and so began a great friendship. Although the pair have very different life experience, they found that they also had much common ground. Both started their creative lives as musicians and they share an interest in philosophy. Levett came to Australia at age ten with her Irish parents and has a particular interest in Celtic wisdom. She brings this interest to her work by incorporating text into her paintings. Kozokos’ sculptural practice is informed by Greek mythology and philosophy. His work has a broad range, spanning classical influences to his own idiosyncratic contemporary style, in both clay and marble – his specialty.
This July the two will combine their talents to bring forth the exhibition “Two Worlds”. As each artist explores their own heritage and personal interests they encounter common themes which are universal. Through fairy tales, writing and mythology, Levett and Kozokos explore ideas about love, courage and transformation.
The show, opening on July the 4th at The Kogarah Cultural Centre promises to be a fascinating outpouring; the result of cross-cultural pollination. “Two Worlds” illuminates the possibilities that life holds when we search for our common ground rather than our differences.
